"Nothing is better than seeing my friends at Young Carers (the ones that understand)" - Amy, age 11
Who are Young Carers?
Many young people have a caring role within a family situation where there is someone who is disabled or with a long term illness. Young Carers can miss out on schooling, social events or normal activities due to their role, which may involve helping their dependant to wash, take a bath or shower, go to the toilet, go shopping, cook or do laundry.
Young Carers Club
The Young Carers Club was established by Brentwood Crossroads to provide additional support and "time out" for young people aged from 8-18 years who have a caring role at home. The Club meets fortnightly at the Walter Boyce Centre and provides a meeting place for young carers to meet with others in a similar situation. We provide a range of activities, including:
- instruction from qualified visitors such as the Fire Brigade
- counselling and careers advice through the Connexions service
- regular social outings, for example a visit to the cinema, to Pizza Hut or to Colchester Zoo.
- craft and drama sessions
At present, the Young Carers Club is available only to residents of Brentwood.
